The history of the hammock
, 08 24th, 2010
The real history of the hammock has been disputed for quite a long time. Spanish colonists first noticed the use of hammocks by Native Americans in the West Indies around the time of the Spanish Conquest. The word itself comes from a Hatian word for “fish net.” It’s not difficult to see how it got its name, but how did they become such a popular way of sleeping or resting? Most accounts are speculative but it’s sensible to guess that hammocks help keep their occupants safe from ground snakes, ants and other insects that may spread disease.
Once Columbus returned to Spain cotton hammocks finally experienced enormous popularity throughout Europe. Towards the end of the sixteenth century, the Royal Navy approved hammocks for use in the ships. Since the sway with the ship they’re excellent for use at sea. When the ship rocks or is jarred the user of a hammock won’t go flying out the way they might if they were in a standard bed.
