A dear friend of mine, Cynthia, goes on cruises quite frequently. She invited me along on a Caribbean cruise this past summer. With so much experience cruising, I looked to Cynthia for tips on how to have the best experience possible.

One tip I was not expecting was when she told me to bring along a portable hammock. “Aren’t there lounge chairs on the deck?” I thought. Yes, there are, but it turns out bringing a portable hammock was a wise choice. During peak hours in the afternoon all the lounge and deck chairs are likely to be taken. With a portable hammock you may get interesting looks from the passengers and crew, but you’ll be able to comfortably soak up the sun.

I affectionately call my son “little monkey” because he’s always climbing onto and into things. He’s very inquisitive and creative. His father and I gave him the opportunity to pick a theme for his bedroom. Naturally, he settled on a jungle theme, complete with a hammock bed.

At first I was skeptical about letting an elementary school boy sleep in a hammock. What if he fell out in the middle of the night? My husband rightfully pointed out that that scenario could happen with a bunk bed, lofted bed, or even a regular bed. So far there have been no incidents. Plus, having a hammock for a bed has opened up a lot more floor space for him to play.
