Up in the Pacific Northwest we’re finally getting our first taste of spring. To me, spring means spending lots of time in my backyard reading books in my hammock. Last year, my husband bought me several hammock accessories for our anniversary.

The hammock accessories included several hammock pillows and a drink holder. Now I can read with my head propped up and a cool drink at my side. It makes reading outdoors all the more pleasurable. Now if only I could get my husband to bring me refills of lemonade!

Hammocks have become synonymous with rest and relaxation, and if you’ve ever had the change to lounge in one for a few hours, you know why. Unlike any other piece of furniture, a hammock shapes and contours to your body, making it seem as if it was made just for you. Despite their undeniable comfort, hammocks do have their shortcomings however.

For starters, getting in and out of a hammock can be tricky for the uninitiated. More than once I’ve seen someone end up flat on their face trying to stand up after a nap. Occasionally, it can also be difficult to find a suitable position on the hammock. A hammock pillow can remedy this; it hooks on to the hammock and stays in place so you don’t have to constantly be fidgeting and adjusting it.

Anyone in a long lasting relationship knows that it can be difficult keeping the romance alive. After a while, many people simply stop actively seeking out ways to keep that puppy love alive and well. But the biggest problem is a misconception that romance is only created when grand gestures are undertaken. This simply isn’t the case. Even the smallest things can be considered extremely romantic if those small gestures are done with the right intent.

With that in mind, a sweepingly romantic gesture can be something as simple as installing a couple of hammock posts and a double hammock in your garden. If this was just placed in the backyard, it wouldn’t be a testament to your romantic sentiments. But if it was installed so that you and your wife would have a place to spend a few minutes together every day, then even a hammock could be an extremely romantic gesture.

Having a home really puts things into perspective. When you own a house, you begin to see that all the things that make for a happy living environment and happy home are in the details. When your comforts and aesthetic viewpoints are taken into account, then you feel relaxed in your particular environment.

Not only should the interior of your home be accommodating, but the outdoor living area should provide you and your guests with a comfortable atmosphere. In my garden, I have a couple of double hammocks that make me and my guests feel great about being outside.  It is the perfect spot to lie around and talk or sit quietly with a book.

One of the most relaxing environments is outside. Sitting back in the center of nature allows you plenty of time to think and center yourself. You’re free from the distractions of the television, the phone, and other people. Some of the best places to do this relaxing are hammock chair stands.

Hammocks are comfortable and soothing, and the perfect place to spend a day reading, napping or just watching the clouds. Stretch your hammock out in the shade to be comfortable in the hot weather, or put it in the sun if you want a tan. Whatever you do with it, a portable hammock is the ultimate garden accessory.

Hammocks are a symbol of relaxation and luxury, and there’s no better place to chill out for a few minutes on a hot day. Fathers and mothers can unwind in a hammock after a long day at work, and kids can rest their heads on a hammock pillow, swinging gently and staring up at the clouds. It’s vital that parents warn their kids about the dangers of horseplay on a hammock, as injury could result.

Be sure to set up the hammock far away from dangerous drops such as the edge of a pool or the downward slope of a hill. Kids waking up from a nap could easily hurt themselves trying to exit the hammock in a disoriented state. Also discourage children from jumping on and off the hammock, as their limbs could get caught in the netting. Backyard safety parameters should be set at the beginning of the season and reinforced as necessary.

Hammocks need proper care in order to retain their support and color throughout the seasons. Hammocks are best left out in the warmer weather, and then brought in and placed in a garage or shed during the autumn and winter months. If a hammock or hammock pad is allowed to endure the elements outside, there is a good chance it will be wrecked at a later date. In order to clean a hammock, it’s a good idea to just bleach it in a little bit of water and bleach. This is of course just for the standard string hammocks. For hammocks with color, use an old washcloth and some soap to rub out stains and grit from remaining outside. Make sure to clean hammocks and hammock pads each summer before putting them away.

Hammock stands can also rust if left out in the rain and snow, so it’s a good to store these in the same area as the hammock or hammock pad. It’s also a good idea to wipe down the hammock stand and ensure no critters are living inside it before storage.

A humid summer morning spent mowing the lawn can leave some homeowners drained. In these situations, nothing short of a quick nap will do. Time to head to the backyard, climb onto the hammock and place your arms behind your head in quiet satisfaction. Suddenly, a snapped hammock chain interrupts your doze and brings you all too literally back down to earth.

Thankfully, there are solutions that don’t involve shelling out extra cash for a brand-new hammock. As with most household products, parts wear out at varying times. Restoring that early afternoon slumber could be as simple as finding a tree-hook, a chain or other hammock accessories.

Hammocks usually made of fabric, canvas, cloth or netted ropes are hanging beds with both ends attached to walls by hooks or tied to trees or posts, durable enough to support ones weight. There are also portable hammocks available that you can bring anywhere you like. This type of hammock is perfect for those who love the outdoor activities such as camping or fishing.

Hammocks with comfortable beds are usually ideal to place on gardens. But in case you only have one or no tree at all in your garden, one or a couple of hammock posts can be bought practically. Some posts are also designed to be removable, so you can easily uninstall them in case they are causing you inconvenience or remove them for relocation.

Summer is the time to relax. The weather permits people to go out and enjoy the sunshine. Here are some tips to make the most of this super season:

~Make your own lemonade, put it in the refrigerator for an hour or so and bring it out on the patio for a refreshing afternoon party with your neighbors.

~Don’t have a pool? Get one of those king-sized inflatables, and splash around with the kids in your yard. Remember to recycle your water afterwards.

~Stretch out for a lazy afternoon on the hammock. Get some hammock accessories to increase your comfort.

~Stay away from hot ovens and stoves on summer nights. Try making cool salads or cold soups for dinner. Follow it up with a scoop or two of your favorite ice cream.
